How it works and what the result means

Words per minute uses five characters per word. Accuracy compares each typed character with the passage at the same position, so insertions shift later comparisons.

Reading the result

WPM uses five characters per word. Accuracy compares each typed position with the reference, so an insertion or omission can shift later comparisons.

What to check next

Check keyboard layout and focus if the wrong characters appear. Paste is disabled because copied text would not measure typing.

Paste is disabled in the typing field. Use the same passage and duration for a fair comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one missing letter lower several comparisons?

The comparison is positional. An omitted character shifts following characters relative to the passage until the alignment is restored; the result is not a language-aware edit-distance score.

How do I start the Typing Speed Test?

Start the timer and type the displayed passage into the input. Finish at the end of the passage or when time runs out.

Does this tool require a download or an account?

No. Open the interactive tool above in a modern browser. The instructions and explanations are available even with JavaScript disabled; running a test needs JavaScript.

Why can two attempts give different results?

Power settings, background tasks, browser scheduling, operating-system input processing and device settings affect measurements. Compare repeated attempts with identical settings rather than the single highest score.
